A Look at "White Horse" by Taylor Swift

"White Horse" by Taylor Swift follows the same theme as most of her other songs: her experiences with an ex-boyfriend. The music video was released on February 9, 2009 and was directed by Trey Fanjoy.

Initial Reaction
My initial reaction to this video was that it completely relates to the song. Along with most of her songs, this video talks about an experience that she had with one of her boyfriends. Also, I noticed that her boyfriend remains unnamed in the song, and in the video.

Analysis and Interpretation
The video describes the relationship that Taylor Swift and her boyfriend had before she found out that he was also dating another girl.  I thought that the other girl was aware of the relationship between Taylor Swift and the boyfriend.  Before the second verse started, Taylor was seen at a restaurant with one of her friends, and her friend was about to warn her of something, presumably of the fact that he was dating another girl at the same time.  After she found out that he was cheating on her, he gave Taylor a phone call, and asked for a second chance, which was the scene shown in the video.  She refuses to give her the second chance, and breaks up with him.

Consideration of Cultural Context
Based on the music video and lyrical content of the song, the video is inspired by Taylor Swift's experiences with one of her boyfriends.  The video starts out with a phone call that between Taylor Swift and her boyfriend. Her boyfriend asks for a second chance, but she doesn't reply. The video is mostly composed of events that happened before the phone call. One of the scenes shows that her boyfriend is also dating another person at the same time, which is why he is asking for a second chance. I think that the song and the video is a message to her ex-boyfriend about how he shouldn't have cheated on her and asked her for a second chance.

Expression of Aesthetic Judgment
I thought that this video was very successful in telling the story of Taylor's relationship.  It represents the song perfectly and truly shows Taylor's emotions.  The video for "White Horse" is a true representation of how someone might feel if the same thing would happen to them, which makes the video a success.
